Electronic Gaming Monthly are reporting that the PS3 will feature an achievement points system similar to that seen on the Xbox 360. Achievement points are extremely popular and encourage more gamers to complete their Xbox 360 games in order to rise up the rankings of the world leaderboards.

In the EGM podcast,Dan Hsu suggests that the Sony points system will be called 'Entitlements', but has no information on how the scheme will work.

Achievement points are points awarded when certain objectives are unlocked in a game, such as finishing a level or killing the end of level baddy. Microsoft suggests that achievements have a learning curve and are designed to create a more immersive and social experience.

In a recent interview Sony Computer Entertainment America bos,Kaz Hirai claimed that it was Microsoft who were actually copying their PS3 strategy, he said, "Every time we go down a path, we look behind and they're right there (Microsoft) - we just can't shake these guys. I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do. If you look at their strategy in other business areas as well, they tend to do that...

The boot's now on the other foot as we wait in anticipation for Microsoft's reply to Sony's latest move.

Only a matter of time before they confirm this.

BTW does anyone know when the PS3 will be up for pre-order on sites such as Game?
Gamestation have already opened and closed their pre-order scheme, play's is still open iirc, but with no delivery dates, Game has a quasi-preorder scheme in place in the stores - “register your interest” which is more of a pre-preorder thing at the moment..

I did hear a rumour of end of August/beginning of September for the official scheme, but that could of course be bollards..

Sony are apparently planning an achievement's system to rival the Xbox 360's successful scheme.

Check out the Headline for more info.

So just another pointless marketing tool to show you have no life? These systems don't bring anything useful to gamers or the actual games themselves. There are enough whores on XBL who live for points, give us something meaningful.
I think it's good that the PS3 will also have the feature, although I'm not keen on calling them ‘entitlements’, hopefully they'll cook up a nicer name before launch.
I bet they're called something much better in Japanese.

On the 360 I love the achievements cause they're a great personal goal. On the PC for the past 10 years or so I found I never had the motivation to complete games. Either they just weren't compelling enough, or I'd just get bored and move on to the next game I'd downloaded.

With the 360 so far I've really given every game I own a good go as I have the achievements to aim for. I don't really care about the points that they give you, it's more the sense of achievement. It's particularly nice when you're playing a game and it pops up saying “achievement unlocked” and you weren't even aiming for one.

I don't care about my GamerScore, I game mostly for fun and although it's nice to compare my GamerScore with close friends I know I'll never have the points to be up there with the big gamers.
