What console war? Nintendo reign supreme.

According to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, Nintendo's DS console has sold a staggering 20 million units since its launch in December 2004 in Japan alone.

The actual total, a whopping 20,052,012 consists of 6,449,206 original DS consoles and 13,602,806 DS Lites. I'm just trying to get my head around this sheer volume of sales and when you take into account the estimated population for Japan in 2007 is just over 120,000,000, you soon realise how big a number it really is. A sixth of the Japanese population has one!

Twist the numbers a little further and I estimate that with the number of days since it launched, the DS console has sold a rough average of 18,380 units per day in Japan.

When the so called console war started with the Xbox 360 launch in November 2005, most of us looked on in glee at the prospect of Microsoft and Sony battling at out. Few of us however expected Nintendo to reign supreme as they literally are doing right now.

The Nintendo Wii can't meet consumer demand and the DS Lite is preparing two new bundles for Christmas. A Merry Christmas is just about guaranteed for those at Nintendo.
