No price cut, but there's a new PS3 starter pack!

Many Europeans were hoping that Sony would announce a price cut for the PS3 at E3 last week, but instead we've been offered a new style starter pack offering gamers better value for money.

The new starter pack is available in the UK on July 18th and will contain a PS3, two first party game and two SIXAXIS wireless controllers for the price of £425.

The choice of first party games available in the Starter Pack include Resistance Fall of Man and MotorStorm; titles specifically chosen to demonstrate the graphics and enhanced gameplay of High Definition games on Blu-ray disc.

"With sell through of over 1.2 million units in the SCEE territories to date, PLAYSTATION 3 has proved to be an instant and huge success", said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.





"The exceptional value of the new Starter Pack will bring the excitement of PlayStation gaming to a much wider audience. Add to this a stellar lineup of software titles for the second half of the year and we are confident that this amazing value Starter Pack will encourage many more keen gamers to join the PLAYSTATION 3 community".

IMO this sounds like we're being ripped off again, but it probably does make more sense both to Sony and to the consumer to do it this way. I can't imagine new PS3 owners not wanting both Motorstorm and Resistance - heck, I'd buy them both, even though I'm not a fan of racing games, because of the lack of PS3 games still. And it reduces Sony's loss while increasing attach rate. Win-win, unless I'm missing something?

Two free games and a free controller - better than the £50 discount they would have given us, methinks. :) May this good move by Sony not be in isolation, please!

But I still wouldn't pay more than £99.99 for a PS3 at the moment. :)

By the way, the BBC News website had a poll about this on Friday - would you prefer the games bundle or a price discount? 82% of people had voted for the discount when I looked.

Its a difficult one but really I would prefer a cheaper console since I tend to play online against friends rather than having them round. When they are round its the Wii that comes out for play.

But I am not the majority, would have thought families benefit from the extra controller.

It's not a bad deal, but I'd still prefer the cost of the console to come down and then let me choose the games I want to buy.

Indeed, Sony are spinning it by saying “look, we're giving you £150 odd quid's worth of value for free!”, but in actual fact it costs them next to nothing to create that bundle, while Europe continues to pay for everyone elses' price drop..

Mind you, the PS3 did launch a hell of a lot later than everyone else, so I can see why they didn't want to drop it just yet.. which if you factor in a few months delay would pop in a European price drop in around November, just in time from Christmas..

Importers should have a field day with this, they should be able to import, pay vat, taxes, shipping, etc and still undercut the European price by a decent margin..

… And it also enables Sony to get rid of these feedback-less controllers in readiness for the second gen ones with vibro action. I'm still in the market for a PS3 and I was hoping for a price drop not a new box-up that adds little or no value imho.
