Following the negativity surrounding the much publicised Xbox 360 hardware issues there could hardly be a better time for Sony to drop the price of the PS3 and reports are suggesting that on July 12th that price cut will happen, with Sony shaving $100 off the price.

According to GameDaily.biz, Circuit City have leaked an advert (below) which shows the price cut. The company's merchandising manager revealed that the drop in price will be retail wide on July 12, with promotional ads to follow beginning Sunday July 15th. It's been suggested that the announcement of the price cut will be made at E3, which begins on July 11th.

Sony would have really wanted to make this announcement themselves, but now that Circuit City have leaked the information other retailers are following suit and confirming to a number of websites that the rumour of a price drop is indeed true.

Analysts had already predicted that Sony would drop the price before the Christmas period following the news that Blu-Ray players are becoming cheaper to produce. "If the cost of Blu-ray is coming down, you can drop the price of anything with Blu-ray in it," said an analyst with Sterne Agee & Leach Inc. "Any price cut is sure to boost PS3 sales, and sales of games designed for the console", but Sony CEO Howard Stinger flatly denied that Sony were considering such a move.

The price cut seems as good as confirmed, but Sony are yet to issue an official statement.

Yep, that's starting to spread across the net. It's just standard practice though whenever a rumour crops up. They're covering themselves by saying ‘at present’.

We won't know for sure till the end of next week.
If they do drop the price in the uk, will they use the usual $1 = £1 exchange rate? no, didn't think so :(
