id Software planning new Quake beater

A new game engine and a new franchise for id software



John Carmack, the co founder of id Software and lead programmer of the highly acclaimed first person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, is currently working on a brand new game engine for an unnamed new gaming franchise.

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, the CEO of id said "We are working on an all-new franchise: it's not Doom, it's not Quake, it's not Wolfenstein, it's not Enemy Territory, it's not even Commander Keen. It is a new id brand with an all-new John Carmack engine and I think that when we show it to people, once again they'll see, just like they saw when we first showed Doom 3, that John Carmack still has a lot of magic left."

id Software have given no clues on the genre of the new franchise, but considering Carmack's track record lies with first person shooters, we'd hazard a guess that he'll stick to what he knows.

Lets hope it's a bit better than the doom3 engine was…
Why do you say that K?

I thought the D3 engine was pretty good really.
Yeah it was pretty awesome, but no where near as good as other stuff now. The problem with Doom 3 was it turned into a twisty corridor with lots of zombie closets, it just got a bit ridiculous. I did enjoy the beginning of the game though.
Doom 3 engine looked blinking amazing at the time.
I intensely dislike the way it took advantage of NVidia's ability to render a stencil shadow in one Z pass. Engines should not rely on API specific features.

It also failed miserably at any large spaces, had a ridiculous graphics memory inprint and just looked bland in general.

It looked great in tight, dark corridors… but that was about it.

I honestly preferred the source engine, which was around the same time. It might have had less advanced lighting, but it was much better in other ways.
