35 million units will sell by 2012, say Nintendo

Nintendo Co. forecast that they will sell appoximately 35 million Wii in the US between now and 2012. George Harrison, Nintendo Chief at Nintendo America Inc. is confident about the prediction, which if achieved, would bring Wii almost in line with Playstation 2 sales in the US, which have topped a record 38 million units. In preperation for the expected high sales of the new console, Nintendo are increasing their prouction at factories in China.

The company are said to have sold approximately 2.5 million Wii world-wide, but could have sold many more. The announcement of 14 titles this week for the summer period will only lead to an increase in demand.

"Demand is much greater than we anticipated," Harrison said. "A year ago no one thought we would be in this position."

"Nintendo will continue to focus on titles that attract people who typically don't play video games,"he continued. "That means there's little reason for the company to upgrade the console with more powerful chips or better graphics. We're starting to see in the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that that's not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to," he said. "So we're going to start work on future technology only when we believe it's necessary."
