Rumoured higher capacity PS3 confirmed

Sony has confirmed that the rumour of an 80GB PS3 in the works is indeed true and that the upgraded console will appear in stores in Korea on June 15th at a retail price of 518,000 won ($557).

The confirmation, from the official Sony Korean website, also reveals that the console will not include the Emotion engine chip, which will help to reduce production costs for Sony.

There's no news yet on when or if Sony plans to launch the upgraded console in the US or Europe.

Meanwhile, the news of 31 PS3 titles, revealed at Sony's Gamers day last week, has apparently caused a surge in sales of the PS3 across the US and Europe. Key first-party PS3 titles unveiled and demonstrated included: Warhawk, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, SOCOM: Confrontation, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Folklore, THE EYE OF JUDGMENT and SingStar.

"More than half of the games we showed during our media event are available only on our systems. This fiscal, from SCEA alone, users can expect more than 15 exclusive games and services for PS3, and another nine for PSP. This doesn’t even take into account the wide variety of titles and game packs we have coming through the PLAYSTATION Network. Given this raft of titles, I think we are very well positioned to meet the needs and wants of every PlayStation user as they build out their game libraries in the coming months, said Sony chief exec, Jack Tretton, in a press release.

Any other differences? (Other than removal of PS2 compatibility and extra 20GB space)

Still trying to find a full translated spec sheet somewhere, but it appears that these are the only differences.
Well there's *loads* of point in that.
Yeah, especially since you can shove your own HDD in there, and people called MS' Elite a rush answer to the PS3.
It's basically a slight spec bump for South Korea on the HD, which makes a kind of sense; South Korea has a lot more broadband and a lot more third party downloadable content so it's a good place to launch the slight spec bump. That and it gives the South Koreans warm fuzzies about buying the local edition of the PS3.

Oh and SiM, the PS2 emotion engine chippery was removed in the PAL PS3 already and that plays plenty of PS2 games… it's not a removal of PS2 compatibility.
