60nm graphics chip

According to reports from a Chinese newspaper, Microsoft will be using a smaller graphics chip in the production of a new Xbox 360 model.

The Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are producing the 65nm version of the Xenos GPU from this May, replacing the current 90nm model. The 60-nm chip is said to cost less to produce and produce less heat compared to the former solution and should be available on the market for this September. The new 60nm model should mean a reduction in the retail price of the Xbox 360.

This week, Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 Elite in the US, sporting features not found on the two existing versions of the console, including a 120 gigabyte hard drive, high-definition media interface (HDMI) port and cable, and a black finish instead of the white one on current versions, Microsoft said. It will not include a high-definition HD-DVD hard drive.
