80 new stores to open nationwide

GAME Group, Europe's leading specialist retailer of computer software and video games, today revealed that their profits for the year ending January 2007 have increased by £5.4 million, bringing their yearly profit before tax to £29.5m. The sales of next-gen software alongside sales of the DS and PSP have been a huge factor in the increase; GAME are to further capitilise on this new era of gaming from the sale of Sony's Playstation 3, which went on sale in March.

In fact, GAME has already confirmed that sales in the 12 weeks leading up to April has seen a 44% increase in sales, a figure which they say has been helped substantially by the introduction of the PS3.

The Chairman of GAME, Peter Lewis commented, "The initial strong sell of PS3 was followed by more normal levels of sales in subsequent weeks. Given the underlying trends and the clearer picture now emerging about PS3 performance, we expect to continue to build on our success throughout the year."

The company is now planning to open another 80 stores across the UK.

Can't read the article at work, but is there any indication that this is tied into the PS3 ‘success’? It seems to me that the very recent announcment that PC gaming sales are up 48% or something like that is good timing.. ;)
You'd be surprised the little amount we actually make off 360 and PS3 software.

It was also an interesting little insight when our regional manager told me how we paid for our launch batch of PS3's (some 250,000)……. Just a little £10million loan :D

The PS3 was only launched a few weeks ago, yet the 44% rise is sales is stated as being from the 12 weeks in the lead up to April. So, is it really down to the success of the PS3? Not exactly, obviously the surge of sales on PS3 launch has helped somewhat, but it's not all down to the PS3.

To answer your question, it's the Chairman of GAME who has stated that the PS3 has helped with this increase in sales and will further help their profits over the next year, but he didn't exactly say that it's all down to the PS3.
