Michael Ironside says... something in his gravelly voice...

Nick Haywood reckons he’s a strategy expert... though we’re not sure how much strategy there is in a game of ‘Snap’...

Way back in the days of yore, like perhaps five years ago or so, a great battle raged between two rival factions. Sore was the fighting and the blood of the fallen drenched the battlefield as brother fought brother, neighbour fought neighbour and everybody stopped to watch as the two hot birds from across the street had one of those screechy hair-pulling fights... What had caused this chaos, what had driven previously friendly people to fight with such ferocity?

The source of the trouble was Command and Conquer and Total Annihilation, two strategy games that did the whole real-time strategy thing so well that not only did they bring strategy games as firmly onto a gamer’s radar as the FPS, they divided the playing community over which was the better. Command and Conquer was without doubt the first to market but Total Annihilation seemed to do nearly everything better. Even after a series of sequels and expansion packs for both titles, the victor was still undecided... and then a hush fell over the ruined cities as both sides retreated to lick their wounds and no doubt plan a new attack...

And now it’s on again, though this time it looks like a one horse race. Electronic Arts burst back into the strategy market with the hugely anticipated Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, a star studded, FMV driven click-a-fest that promises to be the defining game of the genre (so far). With a cast list headed up by the sci-fi favourite Michael Ironside and Billy Dee Williams, and simply loads of action and a new faction, can Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars make a place for itself in today’s market?
