According to Reuters early this week, Microsoft are investigating fraudulent activity and account theft that is currently taking place over their Xbox live gaming service.

The investigation apparently stems from a number of Xbox live users who have reported that their accounts have been stolen. Microsoft say that they are closing in on the hackers involved, but it's looking like Mirosoft may well have to investigate their own Xbox live support time, who PC advisor claim may have been 'unwittingly helping hackers snare players' identities.'

If you've ever had the pleasure of phoning Xbox live support you'll be fully aware that some of the staff are not the full ticket, but what PC advisor are claiming goes far beyond a simple lack of knowledge, it boils down to complete incompetency if true.

Here's just a brief snippet of how people are stealing your account information:

"How do we get your information? Its easy...you call [and] pretend to be that person, make up a story about how your little brother put in the information on the account and it was all fake, blah blah blah you might get one little piece of information per call but then you keep calling and keep calling, every time getting a little more information. Once you have enough information you can get the password on the windows live ID Reset. They may tell you they can’t but its bull s***. People at Bungie CAN and WILL reset your password."

Thats actually pretty serious… I mean your Live account has your credit card details linked into it for purchases. I've always thought they should make you set a pin to confirm purchases on your card, or confirm expiry date or something… pressing “purchase” is just far too easy.
Agreed Tom,

I phoned up Microsoft last year and asked them why they didnt ask for the CVV number or a pin to confirm the purchases and was advised that as the information was on the HDD the card holder must of agreed for the transactions.

It is worrying though as you cant even remove any credit cards that are on the account, I asked Microsoft to do this middle of last year and was advised that the system wouldnt allow for a card to be removed??

Think I might call them tonight and request that with the recent hacking stories I dont want my card details there and see if they will remove them now
This is why I've never signed up for the Live service with a credit/debit card.

Pre-pay all the way for me as I'll pay cash for the card - insert the code and then that way my details are not at a greater risk than normal.
I've gave them my brother's credit card details to pay for a year's subscription in the past. They never questioned it. I didn't have a card at the time.
I've always said to myself that the same people who hack games, software etc.. are the same people that made the program in the first place! Hench why its soo easy for them to hack it
