Sust-it.net, a website intent on making us all that bit more energy efficient and providing information that they hope will prompt us to reduce the impact of C02 emissions on the environment, has flagged up the fact that the US version of the Playstation 3 boasts a massive 350 Watt power supply, seven times the amount of power used for the PS2.

We're not experts on energy consumption, but Sourcewire suggest that it will significantly increase our electricity bills in addition to lending a 'tiny' helping hand in destroying the environment." If you were to combine a PS3 with a LG 71” HD Ready Plasma TV to take full advantage of the amazing graphics you could be burning 1.4kWh (kilowatts) of power per hour and if you’re a serious gamer that could cost you £1.19 for a five hour session," states the website.

Doesn't seem very much to us (who has a 71" plasma TV!) and for those who can afford to buy a PS3 in the first place surely a few extra pounds each month will be loose change, but nevertheless Sust-it are mainly unhappy that electrical goods, such as the PS3, don't have to have the same labelling policy that motor car manufacturers have to have by law, warning consumers of high energy consumption. “We expect new car launches to announce more performance with less fuel consumption; it’s a pity that this does not apply to electronic goods. Is it not time for an energy efficiency rating system for consumer electrical goods?”

If Sust-it visited our office on an average working day they'd have their brains fried by the vibrating electrical frequencies whizzing around our desks.

More power = more costs. It's hardly news, it's fact. However, it's still mildly interesting to learn that the PS3 has such a huge power supply.

Sourcewire claim it will significantly increase our electricity bills

… only if you own one :p
Hmm, so they're saying: 'If you combine a pretty power efficient console like the PS3, with a HUGELY power hungry large plasma display, your electricity usage might be a bit higher'

How many people actually have a 71" TV? Im not sure I could fit one that big in my living room!

Of course it using more power than the PS2, it has more to power FFS.

Is it? I thought the implication was it used more than twice the power of a '360 and seven times that of the PS2..

I think it's something like 153-163 Watts for 360.
