According to the figures published by video game magazine publisher Enterbrain, Sony had sold 466,716 PS3 consoles in Japan by the end of December. Sales of Wii are said to have reached 989,118 in the same time frame, despite launching three weeks later than the PS3.

Earlier this week Sony revealed that they have reached their 2006 shipment target for PS3 consoles in North America; the same target was applied to the Japanese shipment. According to the senior VP of marketing for SCEA, Peter Dille, Sony have shipped one million units in North America, a figure that surpasses previous shipment targets for the PS2 and Playstation One. Shipment figures for Japan for 2006 have not yet been confirmed.

Sony have now set a further target of shipping six million consoles worldwide by the end of March 2007.
