If you don't already know someone who has bought Nintendo's new console, meeting new friends on Wii may be a daunting prospect. MapWii.com is attempting to make the friend meeting process easier by allowing you to search for gamers within your area by way of a map system.

Currently, there are approximately 3,500 people signed up to free service, which allows you to search your country and view the 'Wii console number' of gamers in your town.

Japan is the only territory that has an online enabled Wii game, but Pokemon Battle Revolution, which was released last month, has received criticism due to the universal friend's code being dumped in favour of a unique friend's code that relates specifically to the game.

Other territories are going to have to wait a but longer before pitting their gaming skills against friends as Wii's online communications are currently restricted to sending messages, phone text messages, emails, photos and exchanging Miis.

Despite pre-launch rumours that a number of Wii titles would feature online multiplayer options they're yet to materialise and Nintendo have been surprisingly shy in revealing which games will be online enabled in the future.

Warning : Unfortunately,MapWii.com doesn't tell you anything about that particular person, so you could end becoming friendly with a lunatic. You've been warned.
