Bah, humbug
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Xbox boss Neil Thomson, made clear his thoughts on the competition between the Xbox 360 and Wii this Christmas.Wii is "in the same category as mobile phones and MP3 players. It has the potential of taking consumers spend and wallet share away from us in general, but at a product comparison level it's not competing with us at all. It's an innovative, low-definition product." he commented. "People will make a clear decision probably as to whether they want that sort of product - a kid's toy - or they want high-definition gaming and entertainment and all that it brings."
Whilst we agree to a certain extent with Thompson's statement, the Wii is a totally different gaming experience that doesn't compare to the graphics and intense gameplay of many of the 360's action titles, we don't however agree with him dismissing the fact that Wii will appeal to adults, by calling the console 'a kid's toy'.
Many of the games we have played appeal to 'big kids' like ourselves and the most anticipated launch title, Zelda: Twilight Princess, will still appeal to those kids who have now matured. You're never to old to have fun and the Wii games currently on offer are fun for both old and young.
In defence of Thompson's statement, we do think that the Xbox 360 and Wii are two great consoles that create the perfect gaming marraige this Christmas; one for serious gaming playing the likes of Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 and the other for pure entertainment from the likes of Rayman Raving Rabbids, Zelda and Trauma Center.
