We reported some time ago that Wii may use the same friend code system that is currently used on the Nintendo DS, meaning that you would have to add friends for each individual game.

It's been confirmed that the friend code will be called a "Wii Number" and it will represent a specific code for that friend for each console, not each game. There will also be an address book, accessible via the main menu, which will allow users to add, view or delete friends.

To register a friend you have to be connected to the Internet. Next you tap in their nickname then enter the Wii Number for their console or, if your friend is on a PC or cell phone, you enter their email address.Keep in mind that to register another person as a Wii Friend, both of you need to register each other.

'Both of you need to register each other'

I can see this being annoying, though hopefully when someone registers you, you are told about it and can register them.
