The latest rumour surrounding the Xbox 360 suggests that Microsoft are planning to delve further into the world of digital distribution by releasing HD movies for download via the Xbox live marketplace.

The rumours, stemming from a number of US websites and the New York Times, claim that movies will be available for rental at approximately $4 per 24 hours and available for purchase at around $10-$15 per title.

It could be said that Microsoft have already tested the water with the release of a 45 minute special of the Sci-Fi Channel's Battlestar Gallatica, but we'd expect Microsoft's response to be the usual 'no comment'.

This is one rumour that we really hope does come true.

Sounds like a fantastic idea, MS needed something big to stop the PS3 in its tracks :)
That would be an excellent idea! I like it…as long as it was at a reasonable price
Sounds great :)
The rental idea is rather good, similar to the on-demand stuff available on various cable/satellite packages at the moment, but I'm not sure how successful purchasing would be. Sure, the hypothesised prices are much cheaper than what oen would pay for an HD-DVD/Blu-ray copy, but the lack of special features (I assume) and the pure fact that you can only watch it on the 360 would put me off. I usually buy DVDs I want to see - I would much rather pay 10 quid to have a DVD for ever, and enjoy everything it has to offfer, than pay 3.50 to have it for only one night. Thus I frequent the three-for-twenty/thirty quid sections at HMV, Virgin etc. ;)

Making the forthcoming 360 HD-DVD drive a burner as well, and concocting some fancy DRM to let you burn a limited number of copies, now there you would be talking. Sadly I doubt something like this could ever happen :(

Keep us posted Steven
Good idea, not sure how most people will feel waiting for HD video on a 2meg connection.
