The official launch line-up for the Playstation 3 was revealed yesterday in Japan, but far more interesting (to us UK folks anyway) was that Sony also handed out a price comparison sheet to show the great dealthat consumers will be getting when they buy a PS3.

The fact sheet details the price differences between the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii and claims that Microsoft's console will actually costs $698 to buy, whereas consumers will be getting an apparent bargain by buying the PS3 at only $499. The fact sheet claims that the Xbox 360 core system requires users to purchase a 20GB hard drive, a HD DVD drive, a wireless controller and an Xbox live subscription. They add up the figures and apparently arrive at the whopping price of $698.

The information that Sony has presented is far from true. The Xbox 360 premium system only costs $399 and includes the hard drive, wireless controller and Xbox live subscription, and even if consumers bought the HD DVD drive seperately, it still wouldn't amount to the ludicrous price that Sony are claiming.

Of course this could all be an honest mistake, but seems to us that Sony are attempting to play down the fact that their console costs a small fortune to buy.

To be fair they forgot to include the Wireless network Adapter which costs extra for 360 and is included in the PS3 and Wii.
I sense a lawsuit coming on.

I don't know what the world's coming to, Sony just seem to shoot themselves in the foot each time they open their mouths.
Is Borat a sony film?

It must be because he appears to be doing Sony's press releases etc
I have to say this is extremely bad work by Sony, did no one check these figures before publishing them to pretty much every interested party.

Problem is (and I have said this in another thread) I think Sony are playing the “say it enough times and people will believe us” card on the pricing. And they must know that people that read and get informed on these type of forums are in the minority. I should think though there will be some interesting comment on the BBC/ITV news when it comes to launch time. Even when they did it about the announcement event Sony got a suprising bit of negative press comment.
“and even if consumers bought the HD DVD drive seperately, it still wouldn't amount to the ludicrous price that Sony are claiming.”

You can do the sums… It's $598. Which is a dollar less than the PS3 with 60GB HD and $100 more than the 20GB PS3. And the 360 spec still doesn't have a wifi adapter.

The PS3 has a lot more in the box than the 360 and Sony are pointing out the low 360 price has a cost later on if you want to up your specs.

None of the numbers are incorrect. It's all about dispelling the myth that the PS3 is more expensive than the 360. It isn't when you do a like for like feature comparison. You can debate wether those features are needed or desired, but not the actuality of the numberage. :D
