Sony's new E-Distribution Initiative will launch alongside the PS3 in November and hopes to surpass the success of Microsoft's Xbox live arcade. The E-Distribution Initiative will provide an alternative publishing opportunity for 1st and 3rd party projects and will enable the direct download of games and other content to the user.

John Hight, Director of External Production at SCEA Santa Monica, was recently interviewed by Gamasutra and was asked whether future titles on the service will be exclusive to the PS3. "We're looking for fresh, new ideas that fully exploit the power of PlayStation 3. Our 1st party projects are all unique to PS3. Some of our games, by virtue of their design and hardware demands, simply couldn't work on Xbox 360," he commented.

Hight was also eager to point out the advantages of E-distribution on the PS3, stating that "Certainly being able to sell globally on-line makes it easier to reach international and remote markets. On the business side, it also lowers our cost of sales and eliminates inventory risk. It should help curtail used game sales and piracy."

Indeed, SCE's president Ken Kutaragi recently said that the PS3 E-distribution content will be the "bread and butter of our business", and that the new initiative will become a 'household experience' for consumers within one to two years.
