Gears of War

The original press release announcing Gears of War, back in 2005, stated that voice recognition would be included in the third person shooter. However, more recent official documents, have omitted the feature suggesting that the idea may well have been canned. Indeed, at this year's E3, the official Gears of War fact sheet didn't include the feature and Microsoft told the press that voice recognition may be included, but nothing was set in stone, or made official.

There's conflicting evidence across the net, with some corners saying that it hasn't been confirmed, and others stating it as fact. In HEXUS.gaming's own Gears of Wars preview, we too failed to mention the feature because we thought it hadn't been confirmed.

We've missed the official announcement somewhere down the line, if indeed there was one, but it does appear as if voice commands and lip synching will definitely feature in the upcoming title.

A new hands-on preview of Gears of War from Game Daily states that 'The game will make use of microphone support, so you can shout commands amongst your team and keep in constant contact, and the voice recognition system and real-time lip syncing promise to keep the communication as smooth as possible.'

So this means that you'll be able to talk through your Xbox 360 headset and watch the character's mouths moving in synch with your voice as you issue commands- excellent!

Voice commands are nothing new in videogames, indeed Rainbow Six 3, Ghost Recon , Delta Force-Black Hawk Down and SWAT: Global Strike Team are amongst some of the games who have utilised this feature. The fact that Gears of War will allow lip synching voice commands will further increase the saleability of one of the most anticipated games of the year.
