No Digital surround sound

IGN have managed to grab a copy of the official Wii documentation which confirms that the console will not support digital surround sound.

Although we can't rule out any last minute changes, it looks as though Wii will utilise Dolby Pro Logic II.

So, Nintendo's new system appears behind the times when it comes to certain capabilities, with no HD support and no digital sound. Nintendo obviously feel that the introduction of digital surround sound isn't required as Pro Logic II seems to have done the job well enough on the GameCube.

Whilst Nintendo are 'old fashioned' in the audio department, they certainly make up for it with the new controller and range of innovative games.

Booooooo - this is a no-no surely! I was kinda looking forward to getting some digital surround sound support (Dolby Digital) from Nintendo this time round. Pro Logic II is fine as far as it goes - but thats its problem, it doesn't go far enough.

<still looking forward to my Wii though>
I've never compared the two - what are the differences between them?

I've never compared the two - what are the differences between them?

dolby digital has 6 discrete channels.

pro logic 2 is stereo, with some basic sense of “you should porbably rumble that rear speaker a bit”
makes sense, they are after all targetting it at kiddies, what sort of 12 year old has a optical surround sound system?
But it's not being targetted at kids.
