The developers of online science fiction game 'Entropia Universe', which featues a real cash economy, have discovered a way for players to withdraw their virtual cash (PED) from an ATM. The ATM will convert your virtual cash into real money based on the current online conversion rate.

Players of 'Entropia Universe' have to sign up to a bank card which can be used at certain Versatel cash machines around the Globe. In a statement chief executive Jan Welter said, "The ATM system is a crucial and significant element in the true monetization of virtual currency, by supporting instant and convenient conversion to real cash." He continued, "MindArk is changing the online gaming and virtual community landscape by introducing a real cash economy that offers validity and secure monitoring of one's funds. We aim to become unique forerunners of online virtual entertainment, and with the ATM technology and economic stability of our universe, we are creating the next level of the online experience."

Entropia Universe has already set a world record by selling a virtual Treasure Island for $26,500 USD - this was the largest virtual dollar amount spent in an online game. However, " The recent sale of the Space Resort for $100,000 USD to famed gamer, Jon 'NEVERDIE' Jacobs, sets a new record for the most valuable virtual item.

It was only a matter of time. I doubt it will be long before we see things like XBMC running on it.

I wonder how hard the PSP will take to crack when released?

*edit* ah :P just seen the Xbox 360 cracked thread ^ ^
so.. you make cash in the game, and then you can take it out of a high street ATM? There could be some interesting consequences if the game was somehow hacked.. though, if it runs on the game's economy, then there would probably be massive inflation and the virtual cash would be worthless..
