A price drop of $20

Sony have today cut the price of the PS2 in North America to between $129.99 and $139.99, that's a $20 drop from the normal retail price.

According to Sony, more than 101 milliion Playstation 2 units have been sold worldwide. The console dominates the U.S market, with a share of 55.6 percent, double that of other consoles.

“While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform,” said Kaz Hirai, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer—an unrivaled combination of the largest selection of software, a growing community for online gaming and one-of-a-kind accessories such as EyeToy—at a new value price.”

Alongside the price cut Sony are playing a huge marketing campaign both online and in print magazines, from April 27th Sony's new price cut will be plastered throughout some of the United State's largest newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune.

The campaign will also include in-store merchandising.

Let's face it, since the Xbox 360 has arrived, my PS2 has been looking like that elderly relative who sits in the corner dribbling. It's about time Sony dropped the price! But will Microsoft follow suit with an Xbox price cut?

You can bet your bottom dollar they will!

There are currently no plans to drop the price of the PS2 in the U.K.
