Violent game canned

Last week we reported that Alten8 were developing a game called 'Office Massacre', a first person shooter which involves slaughtering your innocent work colleagues. True to the form of the paranoid public and press, the game, due out on mobiles and pda's, has now been cancelled.

In a statement to Games Industry.biz, Alten8 said: "We have taken the decision to stop the release of the mobile phone game created by the Russian development team Zen Design, and planned for publication by ourselves. We are genuinely shocked by some of the press reactions to the game. No offence or damage to society was intended by this game, and we resent the comments made by some individuals about our company, also the unfair and unjust comparison of this game to other extreme games."

Details on the game have now been removed from the company's website.

Were Alten8 irresponsible for even thinking about a game such as this? or is it just mindless fun?

As far as I'm concerned it was given an '18' certificate, and is no worse than watching a violent film, such as Quentin Tarrantino's 'Hostel'. If some sick individuals want to kill someone, they will kill whether they play a violent game or not.

What's the betting it'll re-appear fairly quickly after being “Banned”?

That marketing ploy hasn't been used in the past.. much.. ;)
At least we still have Postal 2
Why?

It makes me laugh. You'd think a violent film has never been made.
A truly ridiculous premise for a computer game in the first place.

I'm suprised they didn't can it earlier.
Brilliant, brilliant PR.

You can't pay for coverage like that.

I bet they hadn't even considered developing the game.
