We tried out Speedlink’s new Medusa Home Edition, which promised to deliver a unique sound experience, ideal for gaming, watching DVDs and speech input.

The Medusa 5.1 home edition promises to deliver gameplay with cinematic sound of such high quality, that you’ll be able to suss out exactly which direction your enemies are attacking. With a 6-channel configuration for surround sound, and front, rear centre and subwoofer speakers integrated into each headphone cup, this headset promises to take you on an audio adventure.

In a behind the scenes look at the headset, and whilst watching a video specifically designed to showcase the surround sound effects – which involved a ball moving in all directions, the sound moved around the headset in exact unison with the sphere.

The sharpness of the sound and the directional focus of the sound’s movement enabled me to pin-point the exact positioning of the objects on the screen, this pin-point accuracy is ideal for hearing enemies approaching.

The home edition comes complete with a rather plain looking speaker system, which is only compatible with the Medusa headsets, it allows you to switch in between your TV and PC, so you’ll never miss that episode of Eastenders ever again.

The shape of the speaker system enables the headset to fit snugly onto the speaker system.

There is an in-line remote with controls and the front, rear, centre and bass plus a separate volume control on the amplifier. Your 5.1 speakers and Medusa are connected directly to the amplifier, and the audio output can be selected by simply pressing the button.

To get you hands on this great piece of kit you’ll need between approximately £85.

has no-one realised that 5.1 headphones are no better than standard headphones for spacial awareness?
Have you actually tried these? My pair of medusa's work spectacularly, I can hear exactly where stuff is coming from. That new Amp box is certainly an improvement on the old one.
you can hear exactly where stuff is coming from with any pair of headphones, due to stereo positioning. if you take one ear, it alone can not tell if a noise is in front or behind it, as a result of which having multiple drivers per ear is pointless.
Well as much as the acoustics may be against it, it works and a heck of a lot better than any stereo headset i've tried.
to be fair 5lab mate…my Medusa's are pretty damn good.

In terms of Centre Channel they just fudge it (no spurpise there really) but back left and right and very easy to identify.
