Chill your Xbox 360 with MTEC technology
CoolIt Xbox 360 liquid cooler
Last week we generated a HUGE amount of interest with shots of the add-on Xbox 360 liquid cooler from CoolIt… well now we’re at CES 2006 we’ve had a chance to actually get our hands on the real thing, so we can bring you far more detail than just a couple of promo shots. Thanks to Geoff Lyon from CoolIt, we’ve been mucking around with the Xbox 360 cooler to bring you shots from every angle…

The first thing to be aware of is that this isn’t just a bolt-on-the-side extra for you Xbox 360, this is a serious case mod as all the Xbox 360 casing under that shiny blue CoolIt casing isn’t there anymore… that’s right kids, this thing is set
into the Xbox 360 meaning that pretty much half the side case is now gone… a fair chunk from the underside is missing too to allow for the pipework.

Looking at these pics you’d be right in thinking that this is a pretty serious mod and hacking into your Xbox 360 with a Dremel to fit a cooler is something that you might think is best left to those that know what they’re doing. That’s what the CoolIt guys think too so you won’t have to fit it yourself, CoolIt are working right now to train up a bunch of fitters which you’d send your Xbox 360 to for fitting. Of course, your warranty is still voided, regardless of who chops your Xbox 360 up, but at least this way you know it won’t blow the thing up if a professional does the job.

The CoolIt Xbox 360 Cooler uses MTEC liquid technology to keep the Xbox 360 running cooler than a standard Xbox 360, which also features liquid cooling. The difference here is that the CoolIt solution uses a proprietary ‘Chiller’ which incorporates MTEC Technology - multiple TECs or peltiers to chill the liquid coolant. This increases thermal capacity and provides for faster heat absorption at the source. This allows for lower temperatures with slower fan speeds and therefore less noise.

You can argue that the big blue add-on sticking out the side of your Xbox 360 is a less than elegant solution, but with the professional fitting that CoolIt are promising, it could be that the Xbox 360 Cooler is just the answer for those who find their Xbox 360’s noise output too high. Perhaps he just doesn't want the sacrosant cover of his white box to be defiled in any way, by "experts" or otherwise :)
TBH, I find it interesting that, not a year hence from the launch of the 360, there is already a sizeable market of those so worried by either the noise or the heat of their expensive machines that they'll pay (probably a decent amount) to have it sent away and have a (not exactly stylistically fitting) box stuck to it, which manages to void the warranty in the process. Not needing to breathe while speaking FTW.

BUT I am agreed with the people who say that this is pointless. Yeah the console heats up but its the DVD drive that makes all the noise - and not the actual system fan. Plus sod voiding my warranty just for the 1337ness - cause afaik you can't even OC the thing - so whats the point? :crazy:Quote
