eSports record broken at Intel Extreme Masters event

The latest event in the Intel Extreme Masters season has broken eSports records as 247,000 viewers tuned in to watch the best professional gamers from across the world compete at the Cyber Sport Arena in Kiev, Ukraine.

Global Challenge Kiev saw players compete in Counter-Strike 1.6, StarCraft 2 and League of Legends for a share of $93,000 with the top two players in each discipline receiving a place at the World Championships, which are held in March at CeBit 2012 in Hanover, Germany.

The competition, which was broadcast by the ESL TV web service via 13 shoutcasts, is now the most successful event in eSports history.



The overall standings are as follows:

Counter-Strike 1.6 ($40,000):
1. Place: Natus Vincere ($16,000 and a slot in the World Championship)
2. Place: SK Gaming ($8,000 and a slot in the World Championship)
3. Place: Moscow Five ($4,500)

League of Legends ($32,000):
1. Place: Moscow Five ($12,000 and a slot in the World Championship)
2. Place: Team SoloMid ($6,000 and a slot in the World Championship)
3. Place: Team Dignitas ($3,400)

StarCraft 2 ($21,000):
1. Place: Moon 'MMA' Sung Won ($6,500 and a slot in the World Championship)
2. Place: Dmytro 'DIMAGA' Filipchuk ($3,300 and a slot in the World Championship)
3. Place: Mihaylo 'Kas' Hayda ($1,750)

"Our Global Challenge in Kiev was a huge success," said Michal Blicharz, the Director of Pro Gaming at Turtle Entertainment. "The positive feedback from the community as well as the number of viewers on the stream are the best reward for all the people involved in the Intel Extreme Masters. Now, with the bar raised so high, we intend to work even harder and look forward to our upcoming events in Sao Paulo and the World Championship in March," he added.
