The London Evening Standard, whose front page yesterday laid claim that Grand Theft Auto was the 'catalyst' behind the civil unrest in London has issued a reprint, ditching the video game blame reference altogether.

Originally the paper carried the line "Children as young as ten, inspired by video game, were among the looters" in reference to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series.

Change ensued as the London paper came under great pressure from the games media and outraged gamers on Twitter.

Reports yesterday suggested that a police officer and local Enfield resident had both shared their views with the Evening standard, damning the popular video game.

We now have a little more from Game Politics, who report that the London police officer had the following to say:"Kids out of control. When I was young it was all Pacman and board games. Now they’re playing Grand Theft Auto and want to live it for themselves."

So far these are the only reports of people holding the hit video game series to blame for the London riots.

Finally - common sense has prevailed! Hallelujah!
So, just an edited reprint, and not an actual retraction then?
There are still copies of the original print in circulation.
LES = cockney tabloid?

I'm actually surprised that it's taken this long to make a connection. Lazy journalism is rife. How long before there's some backbench MP calling for bans/restrictions on such “dangerous” entertainments? :rant:

That said, I can't remember anything in GTA that parallels what the thugs were up to, (is there something in The Lost & The Damned?). With the Norwegian massacres being partially blamed on CoD, and now this the games houses must be feeling under a bit of pressure?
There was also a murder in Leicester, the victims mother claimed the killer had mimicked the game Manhunt.

I'm off to asda to eat all the cherries and hold Pacman responsible.
