Like many others, it seems, we didn’t expect to have to fork out as much as £129.99 to get our hands on Microsoft’s upcoming motion-sensing gadget, Kinect. That’s almost as much as the new 4GB Xbox 360 console which you can pick up for £149.99!

Since the price was announced, Microsoft has received a mini backlash from some sections of the gaming community, but has been quick to respond to the criticism and defend the high price point.

Speaking with MCV, Chris Lewis, VP of Microsoft Europe’s Interactive Entertainment Business said:

“As with most things, we do massive amounts of consumer research. Not only did we consult with people like yourselves, but also the analyst community. We think this is great value,” he said.

Lewis then compares what Kinect has to offer to PlayStation Move, Sony’s upcoming motion-sensing periperhal.

“Look at our pricing versus what we’ve seen from Sony,” he said. “If we take their US Move details for example – obviously we’ve not seen their Move price-points for EMEA – but we expect Move will cost €150. But when you look at a two player Move experience, we think we will be around €150 less for the equivalent two-player experience.”

You’ll be paying for what you get then, apparently. How do you feel about the pricing for Kinect? Let us know in the HEXUS.community forums.

They can defend it all they want. It's priced to high. They say it will add another level of gaming, for what exactly? The family and kids games that will be out for it in time for Christmas? The odd exercise game. They claim some heightened experience but in my eyes you will loose the feeling in some games. For example, racing, yes I can hold my arms out and steer and change gear etc, where's the feedback? How do I judge when I am about to slide out or hitting a rumble strip etc?

Over priced and far to gimmicky, cashing in on what the Wii has and they would like a cut, same with Sony and their Move. Big no for me, the only way I can see this working is in a big living room, plenty of space etc. The side of it for the media control! Waving my arms about is just as easy as using an analogue stick to move left and right. I don't see the added bonus of having one of these, especially when for the price of the Kinect I could buy a Wii itself xD

That's pretty much the killer. It's impressive that Wii prices have remained more or less static actually, while other consoles have had to drop prices to keep sales up. But it is a console designed around the interface and likewise the software titles are already there to take advantage of it. Raving Rabids just would not work without the motion controllers!
I'm going to have to agree, the price for a glorified motion sensor is way too high. Especially when you consider MS originally quoting a price of ‘No more than $50’. I'm in the UK and the price of this has been announced as £129.99 which is currently $198 US.

I got the new Xbox and I'm relatively impressed with it. But rest assured I won't be buying Kinect, not at this price.
we all know what happened to the eye toy and i cant help thinking the same is gonna happen here, granted MS will support this platform better than how sony treated its eyetoy, but will the game developers bother?

But have MS actually ever said that - no, otherwise there would be an even bigger furore surrounding the price.

Onto the thing itself, for me its to expensive - but relatively i don't know if it works out that expensive. You don't have to buy two controllers for everyone to enjoy it and you get a game free with it.
Another interesting choice they've taken for me personally, is the lower RRP for Kinect titles, I'm not to sure if its MGS games only or all but its a step in the right direction for mass appeal.
