News from last week's Develop conference in Brighton last week, via Joystiq, reveals that stereoscopic 3D titles on PS3 will be restricted to an output resolution of 720p.

One of the first 3D launch titles, Super Stardust HD is a 1080p game, but was downscaled to 720p so that performance wasn't affected. Sony’s senior development manager, Simon Benson said that if 3D games did run at 1080p framerates would drop, so instead it will split any native 1080p titles into two 720p images so that they can still run games at 60fps.

Sony says that the difference won't even be noticeable.

3D Blu-Ray movies will still run at 1080p, but obviosuly video games are far more hardware intensive. Are you bothered about not getting the full HD experience?

If the difference isn't noticeable, what's the point of 1080p in the first place?
You won't notice the difference in 3D perhaps?

Or just management spin :)

Something like that :)

Just read else where that there are only a few games that actually output 1080p anyway, virtually all are 720p60fps anyway.

Ignoring all this, is anyone surprised? The PS3 is going to need to do more work to output a 3D image (twice as much, I don't know how this tech works) so why would you expect to get full resolution and frame rate gaming in 3D from a console that originally wasn't designed for it? The fact that 3D gaming will actually work on this in the first place, to me is testament to the power and flexibility of the system. I say well done to Sony on the PS3*

its a waste anyway, why would someone spend so much on a 3d tv to play on a cheap console, rather than a pc
