UK Supermarket chains Asda and Tesco are trialling a new used-game scheme that allows consumers to trade in their games at some of its stores.

MCV reports that the scheme has begun at Leeds Asda Living store at Crownpoint and has also been confirmed at Tesco's Basildon Pitsea store.

The news is sure to go down like a lead balloon with some publishers who have been very vocal about the used-game sales market and its financial impact on them.

Recently, Electronic Arts has led the charge to combat used-game sales by introducing incentives for those who buy its game brand new. In Mass Effect 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 gamers are given a VIP code that gives them access to exclusive content.

Over the past few years a number of major retailers have tapped into the multi-billion pound used-game market, including GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon. Gamestop alone is said to rake in approximately $2 billion annually from the sale of pre-owned games.

This is good for us but devs hate it, they get nothing back from it. I think this is another reason Steam is so popular
do games not have the disclaimer on them about resale, lending and public performance prohibited etc?

are they not in breach of something by doing this?

if the devs dont like it, do something about it!
If the devs do not like it, the software houses should drop the prices.

£40-50 for a game that can last some people 4-8 hours, is a complete rip-off and they should expect re-sales in a lot of cases.

Game have been doing it for years, I'm sure if they were in breach, something would have been done about it by now.

Personally, I'm with shaithis, I can't afford full rrp all the time, so I'll wait for the game(s) to show up in preowned.

I know we have ‘classics’ that are released, similar to the PS2 platinum system, but it takes far too long to happen imho.
