Recent rumours have suggested that Microsoft is planning to drop the standard Xbox 360 SKU from its line up, leaving only the Arcade and Elite models available.

Adding fuel to those rumours is a potential price drop for the Xbox 360 Elite. The folks over at Kotaku.com have managed to snap the following ad from a Meijer catalogue, suggesting that the top-end 120GB model will be made available for $299.99 - that's a $100 price cut.

There's no confirmation from Microsoft just yet, but this could be an attempt to counter the upcoming PlayStation 3 Slim from rival Sony. Should it happen, Microsoft's Xbox 360 range would consist of the hard drive-less Xbox 360 Arcade priced at $199.99, and the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite priced at $299.99.

Looking ahead and conjecturing somewhat, that could leave room for a Natal-bundled Xbox 360 to be introduced at $399.99.
