Following drastic price cuts in Japan, Microsoft has finally confirmed that its US customers can look forward to cheaper-than-ever Xbox 360 consoles as of tomorrow, September 5th.

Microsoft's entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade, mid-range Xbox 360 and high-end Xbox 360 Elite, are to be priced at $199.99, $299.99 and $399.99, respectively.

Eagle-eyed followers of the so-called console war will note that the all-new Arcade pricing makes the Xbox 360 the cheapest next-generation console of them all - some $50 cheaper than Nintendo's Wii.

According to Microsoft, "history shows that more than 75 percent of all console sales happen after the price falls below the $200 mark". It will be hoping the low prices help keep its console ahead of Sony's PlayStation 3, though it has little chance of catching the all-conquering Nintendo Wii.

Having launched in 2005, it has taken the best part of three years for the Xbox 360 to fall $100 in price, and Microsoft is re-aligning its product as a family-friendly console for the casual gamer. Though the hardcore titles such as Gears of War 2 remain key to the console's success, Microsoft will launch an all-new Xbox 360 dashboard later this year in the hope of making its console easier to use for the casual gamer. In addition, it will launch a series of casual games such as the upcoming "Lips" - a karaoke-style game with mass appeal.

Microsoft is yet to announce any price cuts for the European market, but we made the following prediction early last month:

Launch Date Launch Price Current Price Christmas '08 Price*
Xbox 360 Arcade December 2005 £209.99 (Core) £159.99 £99.99
Xbox 360 Premium (60GB) December 2005 £279.99 (20GB) £199.99 £149.99
Xbox 360 Elite (120GB) August 2007 £299.99 £299.99 £199.99
*predicted prices

With the Xbox 360 falling below the £100 mark in Japan, these predicted UK prices may no longer be a stretch of the imagination.

Why reduce the price? Who are they targeting? Most people who wanted an XBox have got one … Its been around for 3 years now, MS really need to produce an XBox 3 or something.

However if those prices by Christmas are real, I might have to get one just because it is so cheap. Thats probably the market. Attracting people with a console already.
it's current gen now. next gen is the xbox 720, ps4, and nintendo zomg
As of tomorrow, Microsoft will be slashing the cost of its Xbox 360 console to as little as $199.99.
At which shop in the UK can I buy it for $199.99 please? :)
Thing is though will we see reductions in Europe also? At the min it is aimed at the U.S, what they need to do is get the Euro price down before christmas also. Should imagine it would put them at the top spot in the christmas sales figures if they do.

Next gen is going to hit roundabout 2012 from what I have read about the net so the 360 is still a very viable option (as is the Wii and PS3). Plenty of life in it still, still yet to be pushed to its limits of what it can do also. Apparently Gears 2 will do just that according to Epic.
The price has also been reduced in Japan so hopefully we will see one too. Although the 360 has done well in the UK the rest of the EU has been quite a hostile market for them.
