In a bid to improve dwindling sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan, Microsoft is taking drastic action by cutting the price of its console to below that of its main competitor Nintendo Wii.
Microsoft has confirmed that it will drop the price of its entry-level model, the Arcade version, from 27,800 yen to 19,800, a reduction of approximately 30%.
The company has also said that it plans to cut the price of its 60GB premium and 120GB Elite models by approximately 5,000-8,000 yen.
Microsoft has been suffering a torrid time in Japan recently with Wii outselling it by approximately 10 units to 1 and the PS3 outselling it by 3 to 1, according to last week's figures.
The company is scheduled to hold a briefing on the Xbox 360 in the Japanese market at 3pm (2am EDT) today, where further details are expected to be released.
According to official sales figures in Japan, published by Enterbrain, Microsoft has sold 684 695 units to date, with Wii selling 6.67 million and PS3 selling 2.32 million.
