In a bid to improve dwindling sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan, Microsoft is taking drastic action by cutting the price of its console to below that of its main competitor Nintendo Wii.

Microsoft has confirmed that it will drop the price of its entry-level model, the Arcade version, from 27,800 yen to 19,800, a reduction of approximately 30%.

The company has also said that it plans to cut the price of its 60GB premium and 120GB Elite models by approximately 5,000-8,000 yen.

Microsoft has been suffering a torrid time in Japan recently with Wii outselling it by approximately 10 units to 1 and the PS3 outselling it by 3 to 1, according to last week's figures.

The company is scheduled to hold a briefing on the Xbox 360 in the Japanese market at 3pm (2am EDT) today, where further details are expected to be released.

According to official sales figures in Japan, published by Enterbrain, Microsoft has sold 684 695 units to date, with Wii selling 6.67 million and PS3 selling 2.32 million.

Western consoles have never really done well in Asia. They are pretty loyal to their brands. Be interesting to see if this actually works and gets some sales on the boards for Microsoft.
Maybe this is the start of the september price cuts, which means Jasper could very well be right round the corner if not here already. :D
Which is good cus I think my 360 is dying :(

I don't see it having a major effect. What will have a major effect will be some decent JRPG's. This can be seen when Tales of Vesperia was released, the 360 outsold PS3 by 2.5 to 1(for 1 week only tho) With Infinite Undiscovery (Square-Enix) due this week and Star Ocean(Very popular series from Square-Enix) due Feb(ish) the future looks a little brighter. Not sure if these are exclusives, if they are then it will be good for sales, but i don't think they are.
Also, it looks like the western world may be getting an influx of Japanese Xbox 360 games. There was an MS presentation in Japan earlier today and it was mentioned.

Loads of RPGS then I guess?
