Cryptic Studios, the American developer of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, including City of Heroes and the upcoming superhero game, Champions Online, is working on a new and ambitious MMO based in the Star Trek Universe.
Star Trek Online will feature everything from the elegant domes of Starfleet Academy to the ancient temples of Vulcan, from the towers of Qo’noS to the Fire Caves of Bajor, from the mysterious Mutara Nebula to the unexplored voids of deep space. all will be represented in stunning 3-D graphics.
Few details have been revealed, though we do know they'll be plenty of scope to explore strange worlds, seek out new life and civilisations, discover resources and uncover mysteries that will change the future of the Star Trek universe.
In Star Trek Online, you'll get to command your own starship as a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior. Outfit it with the systems that you need to make your mark in the galaxy and customize it as you see fit. Recruit, train and mold your crew into an elite force for exploration and combat.
Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek Online will be developed for both console and PC formats (we know Xbox 360 is definite, but we're unsure about the PS3 version).
Will Star Trek Online be the MMOG that allows us to boldly go where no one has gone before!

Be really cool if they can pull it off, instantly makes me think of Mass Effect but with a bit more scope with regards to the ship. Planet sections can be done in 1st or 3rd person, either way will work. From the shots it looks like they are putting a lot of work into the planetary sections, hopefully they will be fully utilised and not just flybys to the nearest spaceport with no exploration.Quote
who wants to go to Rysa?
are the Borg in it? I might want to customise the ship a bit with 'salvaged' Borg components and go around assimilating everyone who proves to be futile.Quote
