Area 51 - Off Limits?

Area 51

Step into an arcade nowadays and you’ll see at least a dozen ‘shooter’ cabinets… you know the things I mean, they’ve got guns mounted on them somewhere and they all follow the same ‘on the rails’ gameplay first laid down by Operation Wolf all those years ago.

After House of the Dead, Area 51 was one such fairly successful shooter, which had you blasting hordes of mutated soldiers and aliens as you worked your way through the levels. But the game has been dormant for some time until Midway decided to pick it up and give us something to play at home.

Now Midway could have just taken the arcade game and slapped that onto a CD with a bit of jiggery pokery and left it at that, but thankfully they’ve actually put a bit of time and effort into making a game based on the Area 51 arcade game in so far as the monsties and shooting stuff aspect goes, but actually coding up a whole new FPS for us to play with… but has it been worth the effort?
