New sport's title from Nintendo

Not content with bringing Super Mario and his friends together to battle for glory in the likes of Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Kart Wii and SEGA's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Nintendo is also working on a new baseball game that will blend the action on the pitch with the eccentric characters from the Mario universe.

Mario Super Sluggers has been announced at the semi-annual media summit in San Francisco where Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing said, "Mario is truly a one-of-a-kind character; clearly fans can't get enough of him and his friends," said Cammie Dunaway,. "We're giving Wii users brilliant new ways to enjoy him while expanding our series of active-play games."

There are few details on the title as yet, but we'll obviously be able to swing the Wii-mote like a bat and Nintendo has pointed out that the controls will be as intuitive as its Wii Sports baseball game.

There's no release date as yet, but we do know that Mario Super Sluggers will be hitting retail this year.
